It was the biggest extermination camp, and the site of the most extensive genocide. Between 1940-1945, the Nazis killed about 1,500,000 people here, mainly Jews, but also Poles, Gypsies, Russians POWs and members of other nationalities. The area, listed as an UNESCO World Heritage, is well preserved and currently it houses the Holocaust Museum.

At the Museum, you visit the brick-mortar barracks in Auschwitz I, and the extensive, depressing area of the wooden huts in the Auschwitz II – Birkenau extermination camp. The most enduring impressions are made by the shocking gas chambers, the crematoria, death cells, barbed wire and the eerie, silent watchtowers.
